Candle Burning Tips
1 : Trim wick to 1/4" prior to the initial burn. The wicks are self trimming as they burn, but may occasionally require trimming between burns.
2: Place the candle in an appropriate candle holder on an even, level surface.
3: For the first burn, allow the melted wax pool to reach the edge of the candle to prevent tunneling. For the 1.5" x 7" Scented Spell Candles this will take about 1 1/2 hours, and about 2 hours for the 2" x 4" Scented Spell Candles.
4 : Once the wax has reached the edge of the candle, extinguish the flame, and allow the candle to cool and harden completely. You will now have a smooth, even top with a slight lip at the edge. This will prevent tunneling and keep your candle burning slowly and smoothly with all subsequent burns.
5 : For all subsequent burns, limit burn times to 1 1/2 hours for the 1.5" x 7" Scented Spell Candles, and 2 hours for the 2" x 4" Scented Spell Candles.
Tunneling occurs when the wax is not allowed to melt to the edge of the candle. Wax has "memory". If you extinguish a candle before the melted wax pool reaches the edge, the candle will remember this boundary and only melt within that narrow central path the next time it is lit, creating hard walls. Channels can also occur within the hard walls, causing the melted wax to pour out. This can dramatically affect the burn time of a candle, causing it to burn through within hours.
Tunneling can occur despite our best efforts to prevent it. To correct tunneling, while the wax is soft after a burn, you can carefully use a butter knife to shave down the hardened outer edges and push them toward the melt pool.
